The UK video mystery shopping business really seems to be picking up speed. I have had my busiest month so far this year, and have been approached by three new agencies asking me to carry out mystery shopping assignments for them. It seems the work I did for the consortium on the Channel Islands is really bearing fruit now as more and more clients are turning their backs on traditional report-only mystery shopping in favour of video mystery shopping.
And it’s easy to see why….. one only has to read some of the mystery shopping forums to see the contempt with which some part-time “hobby” mystery shoppers treat their assignments. Although in their defence, some of the “old school” mystery shopping agencies treat their shoppers with contempt – expecting them to work for next to nothing – and so it’s not suprising that the old style of report-only mystery shopping is in steep decline.
With video mystery shopping, the entire visit is captured meaning that the client not only gains an invaluable insight in to how their business is seen from their customers’ point of view, they can also see that the mystery shopper has conducted the assignment exactly in accordance with their brief, thus ensuring they are getting exactly what they paid for.
It’s no wonder that so many of the old-guard mystery shoppers that dominate the forums refuse to embrace the new wave of video mystery shopping – it leaves them unable to “fake it” when they get back home and realise they accidentally omitted part of the brief.
